    When most people hear “offload your thinking,” they picture delegation — handing a task to a person, a VA, a contractor. That’s one form, but it’s not the core move.

    The deeper move is externalizing cognitive load to a substrate: any reliable system outside your skull that holds the item so your working memory doesn’t have to.

    ## Your Brain Is a CPU, Not a Hard Drive

    Your biological brain is not designed to store. It’s designed to *process*. It’s a CPU with a tiny register, not a hard drive.

    When you use it as storage — keeping the to-do list, the client’s preferences, the half-written paragraph, the follow-up you can’t forget — you burn the very capacity you need for the work that actually requires you. Every item you hold is a slot a client problem can’t use.

    Every item you externalize frees that slot for judgment, creativity, and decision — the things no substrate does as well as you.

Fill a fifth slot, and something falls out. The eviction is quiet. You don’t feel it happen. You just discover, mid-task, that the thing you were holding is gone.

    ## The Tax You Pay Every Time You Switch

    Every time you switch between tasks, you pay a tax. The research on attention residue is consistent and uncomfortable. When you move from Task A to Task B, part of your cognitive bandwidth stays stuck on A — the “residue” — and that leftover attention slows you down and degrades the quality of your work on B.

    One widely cited estimate puts the cost of a single interrupt at roughly 10–20% of the productive time on the task you were working on.

    Every notification you flick to, every “just one quick reply,” every context hop from Slack to email to spreadsheet back to your draft isn’t free. It costs you a measurable slice of the next thing you do.

    Life is constantly throwing you new material, and your default is to hold it in your head until you “get to it.” Most of it never gets to “it.” It just sits there, occupying a slot, generating a low-grade hum of “I should really…” that never resolves into action.

    ## Decision Load: The Hidden Tax

    Decision load is deciding what to do with each item and in what order. Which client gets answered first? Which lead do you chase? Do you write the blog post or invoice the client?

    Every one of these is a micro-judgment, and judgment burns your limited slots faster than anything else because you have to hold the options side by side to compare them. Decision load is the most expensive load per slot, and it’s the one most operators don’t even know they’re carrying.

    ## Production Load: Where Value Lives

    Production load is actually doing the work. Writing the proposal. Drafting the chapter. Designing the deck. This is where you create value, and it’s the load that demands the most sustained attention.

    But it’s also the load that gets starved first when capture and decision loads are hogging the slots. You sit down to write the proposal, but three slots are already holding the emails you haven’t answered and the leads you haven’t decided about. The proposal gets the leftover slot. It deserves better.
